What is Hospice Care?
Hospice Care is a specialized form of compassionate care focused on providing comfort, dignity, and support to individuals with a life-limiting illness. Unlike curative treatments, hospice care prioritizes quality of life, addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs while helping manage pain and other symptoms. It also supports families, offering guidance and counseling as they navigate this challenging time. Hospice care can be delivered at home, with a team of healthcare professionals working together to ensure that the patient and their loved ones receive personalized and empathetic care. The goal is to enhance comfort and peace during the final stages of life, honoring the individual’s wishes and fostering a sense of peace and closure.
When Should I Choose Hospice Care?
Choosing hospice care is often an important decision made when curative treatments are no longer effective, and the focus shifts to comfort and quality of life. Hospice care is considered when a doctor determines that a patient has a life-limiting illness with a prognosis of six months or less if the disease follows its natural course. However, the timing of the choice also depends on the individual’s needs, preferences, and goals for care. When symptoms like pain, shortness of breath, or emotional distress become challenging to manage at home, and the primary goal becomes comfort rather than prolonging life, then hospice care can provide relief and support. Families may also choose hospice care to help manage caregiving’s emotional, spiritual, and practical aspects during this challenging time. It’s a compassionate choice for those seeking peace, dignity, and support during the final stages of life.

Is it time?
To be eligible for the Medicare Hospice Benefit, two physicians must certify that the patient is expected to live less than six months if their illness runs its normal course. Often, eligible patients are referred with only days left to live, which limits the full extent of holistic care that the hospice philosophy and team care can provide to the patient and their families. If you have questions regarding hospice eligibility, please get in touch with Amber Hospice and discuss options.

How will I pay?
Hospice care is a covered benefit under Medicare for people with a life expectancy of six months or less. Medicare will pay up to 100% of the cost of hospice services. Those with Medicare Advantage plans are covered by original Medicare. Individuals with a private health plan should inquire with their insurance provider for details about hospice coverage and any out-of-pocket expenses.
