What is Hospice Care?

Hospice is specialized comfort care for individuals with a life-limiting illness who are no longer seeking curative treatments. Its focus is on providing comfort, managing symptoms, and enhancing quality of life while supporting emotional, spiritual, and practical needs. Hospice also guides and supports families through the patient’s journey and during bereavement..

When Should I Choose Hospice Care?

Choosing hospice care is often an important decision made when curative treatments are no longer effective, and the focus shifts to comfort and quality of life. Hospice care is considered when a doctor determines that a patient has a life-limiting illness with a prognosis of six months or less if the disease follows its natural course. However, the timing of the choice also depends on the individual’s needs, preferences, and goals for care.
Common triggers that may indicate hospice readiness:
  • Hospitalizations or ER Visits
  • Declining Physical Function
  • Progressive Weight Loss or Poor Appetite
  • Advanced or Worsening Illness
  • Increased Dependence on Others
  • Emotional or Mental Changes

Is it too early?

Often, eligible patients are referred with only days left to live, which limits the full extent of holistic care that the hospice philosophy and team care can provide to the patient and their families. If you have questions regarding hospice eligibility, please get in touch with Amber Hospice and discuss options.

What are my options?

How will I pay?

Hospice care is a covered benefit under Medicare for people with a life expectancy of six months or less. Medicare will pay up to 100% of the cost of hospice services. Those with Medicare Advantage plans are covered by original Medicare. Individuals with a private health plan should inquire with their insurance provider for details about hospice coverage and any out-of-pocket expenses.
